Woodley came from Haiti to Israel to be saved

At the end of January, Israel's heroic national rescue team brought 6 year old Woodley Elysee and his aunt from earthquake-stricken Haiti to Israel so that Save a Child's Heart can perform the heart surgery that Woodley needs to survive into adulthood.

Woodley has undergone his surgery, and he is one of thirty children being treated by Save a Child's Heart in Israel. Though the Israeli doctors donate their time, $10,000 is needed to save the life of each child. Help us reach our goal of saving ten more lives in February!

Watch Israeli world music sensation Idan Raichel's touching video. Look at the faces of the little ones awaiting surgery. Check out the personal messages and the personal stories -- of kids and of givers -- on our Wall of Hearts.  Help us save the lives of Woodley and his friends!

Please give generously from your heart so we can repair theirs.

SACH Medical Mission to Ethiopia

Dr. Akiva Tamir and Professor Abraham Haileamlak Mitike just returned from a five day mission to Jimma, Ethiopia.  The arrival of the doctors was announced on the radio and the local parents brought their children to the hospital in Jimma to be screened by Save a Child's Heart.

For the first three days Professor Abraham was working alone and screened children with the portable echo machine on loan for the medical mission from GE.  Dr. Tamir joined him for the last two days of the mission.  The two of them were also joined by residents and students from the Jimma hospital where the assisted and learned from the experience.

As a result of their working morning until evening 51 children were examined in the clinic. 20  of whom were found to need surgery now, and the rest will require follow up in the next few years and possible surgery.

Professor Abraham has been training with Save a Child's Heart since September, 2009 and he will return to Ethiopia in six months.  The first of the children who need surgery will be arriving before he returns home.

"...Wadley is suffering from four different heart defects, which keep oxygen from circulating properly through his body. If he does not undergo a complicated surgical procedure he will in all probability not reach the age of 10.

But an ambulance will be awaiting him at the airport in Israel, in order to transport him directly to Wolfson Hospital in Holon.

"Two months ago they sent Wadley's heart echo test from Haiti to us at Wolfson, and we decided that he had to be operated on," says Dr. Yuval Levy, who ran the premature baby ward at the field hospital established by the Israeli delegation to Haiti.

"But until now he could not be brought to Israel. The medical team succeeded in finding him here and we are bringing him with us to Israel. In the coming days he will undergo the surgery he needs at Wolfson...." Read More
