Sponsor a youth from Sderot to attend Sderot Youth Summer Knowledge Camp at The Hebrew University. Each camper is currently suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) caused by eight years of rocket attacks. Lend a Hand and donate what you can, the smallest donation will make a difference. Each donation gives these children hope to survive the continuous rocket attacks and a week away from their missile-rocked town.

Study: Most Sderot kids exhibit post-traumatic stress symptoms

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a severe anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to any event which results in psychological trauma.

Accoding to a Haaretz.com article, between 75 percent and 94 percent of Sderot children aged 4-18 exhibit symptoms of post-traumatic stress, says Natal, the Israel Center for Victims of Terror and War.

Natal's study was based on a representative sample. The study found 28 percent of adults and 30 percent of children in Sderot have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The study was conducted by Dr. Rony Berger, director of Natal's Community Services Department, and Dr. Marc Gelkopf, with the assistance of pollster Dr. Mina Tzemach.

The town of Sderot and the western Negev as a whole have been subjected to barrages of rockets launched by Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip for over seven years.

Inaugural Lend a Hand To Heal - Sderot Youth Knowledge Camp @ The Hebrew University

Summer camp is a time for young people to play and explore freely, shed their worries, and just enjoy life. Any youth would jump at these opportunities – just imagine how welcome this would be for the Israeli youth of Sderot, who for eight years have faced a barrage of Qassam rockets fired from neighbouring Gaza.

Making Matzoh

This summer, 200 Sderot teenagers, ages 13-18, will receive a meaningful summer camp experience thanks to the Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University and the Committee for a Secure Sderot.

The two organizations have joined to create “Lend a Hand to Heal” – Sderot Youth Summer Knowledge Camp at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.  Starting August 1, the teens will receive a stimulating week-long program at the Joseph Meyerhoff Youth Center for Advanced Studies, Edmond J. Safra campus of The Hebrew University.

With your help these youth can enjoy an educational experience of a lifetime.  $720 will send 1 youth to Knowledge Camp at the Hebrew Univerisity for 1 week.   Whether you donate $72 or $720 your support is needed.  Consider sharing this cause with 7 or more of your friends The ripples of your network and that of your friends will grow exponentially  bringing your total impact to new heights.

"An Evening with the Stars"

At “An Evening with the Stars,” the camp’s opening barbecue, youth had an opportunity to stargaze, as well as to view Albert Einstein’s long-lost telescope, now meticulously restored. They also enjoyed mingling with a different kind of star, swooning when Israeli singer Shlomi Bar-el — a veteran of Kochav Nolad, the Israeli version of American Idol — performed.

Kids Enjoying Camp @ Hebrew U

All present were invited to participate at various stations were, with the help of Hebrew University science students, they exploerd astronomy and flight-related topics, including how to build and operate telescopes, stargazing through advanced telescopes and surprisingly enough, how to build a working missile.  Each station attracted large crowds and generated considerable enthusiasm.

Evening With The Stars

In attendance at this inaugural "Knowledge Camp" were some 200 campers and their families as well as Hebrew University President, Prof. Menahem Ben-Sasson and Nathan Lindenberg, National President of the Canadian Friends of Hebrew University.

This celebration of this very special project took place at the university's Joseph Meyerhoff Youth Center for Advanced Studies.
