Spark is a community of young, global citizens seeking to change patterns of inequality that impact women throughout the world. To meet this goal, Spark has partnered with Maitri, a nonprofit organization that helps South Asian families facing domestic violence, cultural alientation, and human trafficking.
Maitri is building a Transition House for South Asian women who are victims of domestic violence and trafficking. For these women and their children, a safe and secure home will give them the chance they need to start anew.

Why does this project focus on South Asian women? |
| Answer: |
While all women are equally vulnerable to violence by an intimate partner, language-specific and culturally sensitive services are particularly vital for South Asian women living in the US where the rates of domestic violence are higher than the general popultation and cultural stigma prohibits women from seeking help. |

Does Maitri serve women outside of the Bay Area? |

Yes. While their primary service region is the Bay Area, their hotline receives both US and international calls. Maitri's highly trained staff speaks English, Hindi, Marathi, Marwai, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Sinhalese, Sindhi, Urdu, Punjabi and Gujarati. |
