Locations of Our Activity

Nepal

In Nepal, TbT runs two four-month-long learning-service programs per year, as well as six five-week-long program "Trekkers on the Way", with a yearly participation of 150 volunteers.

The educational program includes the study of globalization, poverty, the environment and development, the Jewish social justice tradition, and Nepal's language, culture and politics. The objective of the study program is to draw from our own tradition, history and experience as well as the most up to date contemporary ideas and knowledge, and an accurate understanding of local reality, in inspiring volunteers towards action based on equality, justice and love of humanity. Once the passion for a better world has been ignited, it will continue to burn: Our graduates will continue to devote themselves to social justice in Israel and other places in the world in their future lives. Following the one month study period, the participants begin to work within Nepali communities, in the fields of education, women's empowerment, agriculture and health, in collaboration with local organizations.

All communities in which we work are currently in a state of transition, and coping daily with hardships caused by global environmental and financial changes; hardships made worse by internal instability. These processes, characteristic of developing countries, typify the condition of poor communities in  Nepal.

Why do we need your support?

So we can send more volunteers to become engaged and enriched by Tikkun Olam—and help create the reality of a more just and beautiful world.

So we can give hope to more rural communities struggling with all their might to stay put and resist the destructive pull of urban slums.

So we can help the youth believe in themselves and in their ability to create change in their lives and the lives of their families and surroundings.

So we can grow as Jews and as humans by striving for justice and for the fulfillment of the Torah's saying "Love your neighbor as yourself", everywhere in the world and especially in Israel.

Spotlight on Our Activity

Tevel b'Tzedek volunteers work and live in rural villages and urban slums, and in cooperation with local organizations and community members strengthen the community in education, agriculture and health.

Youth will make a difference –the first youth movement in Nepal

In November 2009, three young volunteers from Tevel b'Tzedek working in Kathmandu decided to try something completely different, never before seen in Nepal.Inspired by one of our Nepali staff, who has dedicated his life to helping working youth, they set out to meld the best of Israeli youth movement practice to his vision and passion.

A Social- Environmental Youth Movement was established in cooperation with urban and rural youth groups, unaffiliated with political agendas of any kind, for the sake of uniting all segments of Nepali society through a common goal – unleashing the creative power of the Youth

The Daycare Centre

Establishing a Daycare Centre

The daycare centre was established in order to meet the urgent needs of young children from families who migrated from rural villages to work in Kathmandu's markets. While their parents worked, these children (ages 6 months to four years) would wander the streets with their older siblings, or sit in the market stalls throughout the day, suffering from the heat and the cold.

A space was found and the volunteers set out to paint, decorate and refurnish. Women from the community were chosen as teachers to run the daycare centre. Soon the place became an active preschool where twenty five children receive food, attention, songs and laughter, allowing them to regain their childhood love of life.

The Daycare Centre Mobilizes Community Development

It wasn't long before the daycare centre became a meeting place for mothers. Women's' groups began to be held in the centre, discussing educational topics such as motherhood and coping with hardships in their lives. At the women's request, TbT provided them with a course in basic literacy and numeracy.
