A single mom gave birth to fraternal twins. One baby was healthy, while the other was not. Alon, the sick baby, suffered from multiple congenital defects. After a few days in the hospital, the mother decided to take the healthy baby home and abandoned sick Alon at the hospital.
As in many cases, to help care for Alon, the hospital turned to First Hug. When volunteers from First Hug first met Alon, he was withdrawn and unresponsive. Alon could not feed from a bottle, so was nourished by a feeding tube. This meant that when he is healthy enough to be discharged from the hospital, he would be transferred to state rehabilitation facility rather than to a foster family or an adoptive home.
First Hug volunteers took upon themselves the daunting task of teaching Alon to feed from a bottle. The effort was successful! Alon Learn to feed from a bottle, began to develop interest in his environment and developed nicely.
Alon is a perfect example of how the involvement of First Hug volunteers changed the course of an infant's life.
