Help Trixie

Trixie was one of two dogs who were shot at while they were tied up in a neighbour's backyard. Trixie survived the shotgun attack; sadly, the other dog did not.

Trixie is a vibrant seven-year old German Shepherd mix who came to the Kelowna BCSPCA in July after a coordinated transfer with the Northwest Territory SPCA.

With the caring help of veterinarians at Great Slave Animal Hospital in Yellowknife, Trixie had surgery to repair the broken right leg and a wound on her left. The bullet travelled fully through! On further inspection, veterinarians saw that Trixie had been shot before and that there was a pellet lodged in her pelvis.

Over the next four-weeks, Trixie recovered from her injuries in hospital and was sent to the NWT SPCA and then transferred by plane the Kelowna BC SPCA for adoption.

Trixie’s rehabilitation of her right hind leg has been slow and over a couple days in care, she has showed more pain and resisted going out on her favourite walks with volunteers. While she loves the extra cuddles, she really misses being able to move around freely without pain from her right leg.

The local veterinarian took some radiographs and could see that the fracture to Trixie’s right tibia (leg) had healed in a deformed position and left her in considerable pain from the instability. A specialist has further determined that Trixie is a good candidate for fracture repair surgery, in spite of her original trauma. With surgery and rehabilitation, the goal is to see Trixie up and walking freely, without pain!
